PostgreSQL Meet-up Recap

Sharing knowledge and connecting with the open source community

On October 8th, we hosted an inspiring and insightful PostgreSQL meet-up at our office in Kontich. The room was filled with people from different backgrounds – experienced database experts, beginners, and open-source fans – all coming together to learn more and connect with others who share the same passion for open source and PostgreSQL.

A Quick Look Back at Our Agenda

The evening began with a warm welcome and it was a great opportunity for everyone to chat and enjoy some snacks and drinks. The conversations flowed naturally, setting the stage for what turned out to be an inspiring evening filled with expert insights and interactive discussions.

Top takeaways:

  • Guardians of the Database: Best Practices for a Secure PostgreSQL Environment by Guy Gyles.
Drawing from his extensive experience, Guy shared practical strategies and tools essential for fortifying PostgreSQL environments against today’s cyber threats. He emphasized not only the importance of robust security measures but also how a well-protected database can strengthen overall system efficiency and resilience.

  • Creating a Board Game Chatbot with Postgres, AI, and RAG by Matt Cornillon.
We had the pleasure of hearing from Matt Cornillon, a seasoned database engineer and open-source advocate. In his session, Matt showcased the versatility of PostgreSQL when combined with modern AI technologies and Large Language Models (LLMs). He introduced the concept of building an interactive board game chatbot that answers real-time rule-related queries, demonstrating the seamless integration of Postgres with AI and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).

This session highlighted how PostgreSQL can be the cornerstone of innovative solutions that blend AI and database management, paving the way for more interactive and intelligent applications.

A Community that Inspires and Connects

The evening wasn’t just about learning – it was about building a sense of community. The post-session networking was filled with meaningful exchanges, new connections, and the shared enthusiasm that makes the open-source community so unique.
